Book Week 2023

La Semana del Libro es una celebración anual que desarrollamos cada año como comunidad escolar para fomentar la lectura y la literatura.

Esta semana se celebra generalmente en abril y es un momento en el que se organizan una gran cantidad de eventos y actividades relacionadas con la lectura y los libros.

Uno de los principales objetivos de la Semana del Libro es promover la lectura en todas las edades y fomentar la alfabetización. Para ello, se organizan muchas actividades dirigidas a niños y jóvenes para inculcarles el amor por la lectura y la escritura.

Como escuela organizamos actividades especiales que incluyeron: 

La visita de escritores e ilustradores, que realizaron talleres con los estudiantes de Upper Primary, cuenta cuentos, titeres,  algunos estudiantes de 11th y 12th visitaron diferentes grados de Lower y Upper Primary para realizar la lectura en voz alta, interactuando con los más pequeños sobre la lectura, se realizo un forum de escritores conformado por alumnos, maestros y personal administrativo de la ABC,  se realizo un intercambio de libros en toda la escuela, los estudiantes de secundaria tenian la oportunidad de participar en trivias y juego relacionados a la lectura en redes sociales. Teniendo la oportunidad de ganar premios que brindo Internacional Libros y Regalos. Ademas se premio a la alumna qe diseño el logo oficial de la semana del libro ABC 2023, con el slogan "Leer es soñar con los ojos abiertos."

El 25 de abril, el LRC llevó a cabo un panel para escuchar a un grupo diverso de estudiantes, profesores y administradores que son todos autores. Fue un evento interesante e informativo que atrajo a una gran audiencia. Los panelistas (tanto aficionados como autores publicados) brindaron información valiosa sobre el mundo de la escritura y la publicación, y compartieron sus experiencias y consejos para escritores aspirantes. El evento fue un gran éxito, ¡muchos estudiantes encontraron nuevas inspiraciones para convertirse en autores ellos mismos! En general, el panel sirvió como una gran oportunidad para que la comunidad se reuniera y celebrara la importancia de la escritura y la narración de historias.

Authors Forum

On the 25th of April, the LRC held a panel to hear from a diverse group of students, teachers, and administrators that are all authors. It was an engaging and informative event that attracted a large audience. The panellists (both amateurs and published authors) provided valuable insights into the world of writing and publishing and shared their experiences and tips for aspiring writers. The event was a great success, many students found new inspirations to become authors themselves! Overall, the panel served as a great opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate the importance of writing and storytelling.

Feria de libros

Este año las bibliotecas de primaria y secundaria lograron unirse para organizar la feria de libros a nivel de escuela, siendo está una verdadera fiesta literaria para toda nuestra comunidad educativa. Contamos con la participación de  11 editoriales que nos visitarón los días jueves y viernes, entre ellas: La Ceiba, Santillana, Barrilete, GRELISAL, Lovaimex, Clásicos Roxsil, Chicos e Imágen, Editorial Educativa, Tía Li, Indole Editores, Internacional Libros y Regalos.  Ha sido una experiencia muy especial ver compartir esta fiesta literaria con los estudiantes de todas las edades, maestros, escritores, ilustradores, y cada una de las editoriales invitadas promoviendo el amor por la lectura y conocer los nuevo títulos que se han lanzado.

We held two additional competitions during the fair, Book Week Trivia, and  Book Week Scavenger Hunt. The winners of these competitions received a special prize from the Libreria Internacional.

The Art and Aspirations Board activity was well attended by students across Secondary as well as some 5th-grade students.  During the activity, students recorded their future aspirations on the various canvases, using text and images.

Secondary Book Week-Announcement 2!

The LRC Team would like to thank everyone who participated in Book Week 2021 and made it the amazing event it was. You may remember from our earlier post that this year's Book Week was very unique in that it was planned and organised as a collaborative project between IB school libraries and local organisations in El Salvador.  You can read more about that here or scroll down to the previous post.

It is now time to report on some of the highlights which arose from the participation strand.

Calligram Competition

The LRC team would like to congratulate Nadine Salume in 7th grade for taking part in and winning the Book Week Calligram Competition with her rendition in the representation of the Hunger Games Novel, which she designed using text arranged to depict an image.  Well done Nadine for your hard work on this initiative!  We look forward to your participation in future activities as well. 

9th Grade Assembly

We also have a winner from 9th grade Michael Romero for leading with student responses during the Book Week Assembly. Well done and a huge thank you to Michael for sharing his ideas with staff members and students during assembly.

Creative Writing Exhibition 

Catalina Portillo in 11th grade won the Creative Writing Exhibition piece for her video submission in which she reads to us from her piece entitled Omaha Beach, which focuses on the power of courage. We would like to thank Catalina as well as all of the participants in this challenge for their exemplary written pieces. We look forward to more creative works from these students and would like to encourage them and others to continue sharing their literary endeavors with us.

Finally, Challenge #3

Read 2 Books per Month, is a student initiative being run by Juan Santos and Sofia Tapias, which as the name states, is a challenge to read 2 or more books each month. This initiative will continue to run until the end of the school year.  Do please consider taking part.

Dia Internacional del Libro

'Desde 1955 la Unesco decide rendir homenaje a los libros y autores. De igual manera busca promover el placer por la lectura en los jóvenes y por eso el 23 de abril de cada año se celebra el Día Internacional del Libro. Fomentando de esta forma la Industria Internacional del Libro y la Propiedad Intelectual΅.

΅Dentro de los esfuerzos de la Unesco por impulsar la lectura a nivel mundial cada año promueve una ciudad que contribuya en el desarrollo de actividades y proyectos relacionados a la industria del libro, accesibilidad digital y empoderamiento de los niños a través de la lectura y este año la Directora de la Unesco nombró a la ciudad de Kuala Lumpur en el país de Malasia΅. 

Esta es una buena oportunidad para que nuestro país pueda contribuir al fortalecimiento de la lectura y asi talvez un dia poder ser seleccionados por la Unesco como capital del libro.

Empoderando a nuestros estudiantes y traer nuevamente el hábito lector que teníamos cuando éramos pequeños. Sabemos que la lectura por placer nos beneficia y nos permite ampliar nuestro vocabulario, nuestra redacción y nuestra forma de pensar a parte que nos abre muchas puertas.

Quedarse en casa es oportuno para practicar nuevamente la lectura, puedes buscar aquel libro que tanto te gusto cuando eras pequeño, o la recomendación que te hizo algún amigo, maestro o bibliotecario de acuerdo a tu género literario.

En el LRC, siempre tenemos diferentes actividades y este año las vamos a realizar de forma virtual. Desde ya los invitamos a que la próxima semana nos puedan acompañar en cada una de las actividades que hemos planificado. 

Hoy contamos con muchas plataformas digitales y recursos disponibles desde nuestra página web, donde puedes encontrar libros en línea, audibles, revistas, etc. al igual que muchas otras fuentes o bases de datos que están disponibles de forma gratuita durante esta pandemia para poder aprovechar nuestro tiempo y nada mejor que la lectura por placer en nuestro tiempo de ocio.

Te invitamos a que estés visitando nuestra página web y puedas disfrutar de cada una de las actividades que estaremos compartiendo y de esta forma poder contribuir al esfuerzo de la Unesco en la promoción de la lectura.

Book Week 2016

ABC Book Week 2016

The ABC annual Book Week event wound up today. Book Week is a whole school event, which takes place around World book Day, and is a  celebration of books, a love of reading and and a love of writing.

Many activities took place during the week, in different sections of the school.

Secondary school students arrived on Monday to encounter a large reading tree, which had sprouted at the centre of the LRC. This tree was quickly embellish by students who prepared and hung their very own book reviews on its branches. The annual Book Week Fair took place from Wednesday to Friday and hosted a variety of  local book shops and artisans. A good number of students and other members of the community seized the opportunity to visit the stalls in lessons and during break times.

The LRC Librarians organised several visits by acclaimed local authors, who lead workshops and talks for many of the students during their Spanish and French lessons. Amongst these authors were Carlos Colindres from the American Embassy and Susana Reyes, each of whom spoke to the 11th grade students. Ligia Salguero Mediateca from the Spanish Embassy, Isabel Barrientos from the Colegio Liceo Francés, Lucia la Guacalcía, and Josué Peña, all local authors, ran reading and writing workshops for the 6th grade students.

A book donation centre was placed at the front of the LRC for members of the community to deposit new and used books in. This will remain in place for the following week. The donations, which are destined for the Centro Escolar Católico Virgen de la Paz, Tamanique, La Libertad are greatly appreciated.

The week’s activities culminated in the annual Character Day, in which students demonstrated their love of books by dressing up for the day as their favourite book characters.  Alternatively, students had the option to show their support of school charities, by wearing charity focused  t-shirts.

This was a high energy Book Week, full of activity and special events, which focussed on the joy to be found in reading and writing. I would personally like to thank Hilda Gomez and Eugenia Rivas for their hard work in organising Book Week in the Secondary.

6th Grade Discovers Audio Books

Last school year I began purchasing playaway audio books for the LRC. We had a nice cabinet put together for them, introduced students to them in assemblies and orientation lessons and then waited for the demand to become greater than the supply. It didn't happen quite that way, Some of the audio books became very popular and a certain number of students did use them often, but it wasn't the explosion we had expected.

Schools are busy places and initiatives, while important, can often get waylaid temporarily at certain crunch times. It doesn't mean they are forgotten and it is not necessarily a bad thing. Often we need to step back and rethink an initiative, weigh things a bit and decide on a new plan of action.

Just this week I was approached by a teacher in the English Dept. who wanted to broaden her students' awareness of the variety of resources we have on offer. Sometimes it makes sense to listen to a book, sometimes reading it is a better fit. For reluctant readers an audio book can provide a enjoyable respite, in which they can experience the story through an audio rendition, pick up new vocabulary, visit new destinations and live amazing experiences all through the eyes of the characters in the book.

We set up two lessons with the 6th grade today in which we sat down and explored the Playaways, as well as the other digital book collections we have been curating over the last few years. Everyone enjoyed this special reading/listening time.  We are hopeful that word will continue to spread,  and that our students will continue to use these great resources.

When the new audio books come in we will invite teachers to bring the students down and explore them as well as our online collections in the Useful Resources Section of the Learning Resources Centre Website.
