Brain Week is Back!

The ABC's annual Brain  Awareness Week begins on Monday, March 16th.

During the week ABC staff and students will focus some time on learning more about how the brain works, keeping the brain healthy and trying out various brain related activities.

The LRC is developing some special plans in support of Brain Awareness Week. These will take place in the interactive Brain Week Playground at the back of the LRC.

Here is a quick glimpse of those activities.

During Brain Awareness Week, students will learn more about the positive effects music can have on the brain. This will happen in the MakeyMakey section through interactions with a large step piano. Students will also get to try out their hand reflexes by playing Whack-a-Potato and Guitar hero. This will again feature MakeyMakey input devices, which will be connected to special LRC guitars and yes, you have it, real potatoes.

The Raspberry Pi computers will be powered up and ready to go with brain puzzles, games and brain teasers and there will be a multitude of other puzzles and code breaking activities available on site, for students to try out.

Teachers can book slots for their students through the LRC appointment calendar and interested students can also book a bit of time, with LRC staff members, during break times.

Brain Week at the LRC

The 10th-14th of March marked the Brain Awareness Week at the ABC.
Brain Awareness Week is"the global campaign to increase public awareness of the progress and benefits of brain research."(Dana.org)

Each year the LRC takes on Brain Awareness in grand style with a large interactive display and small exploratory sessions for interested classes. For this year's celebration the LRC added to its collections of puzzles, brain teasers, exercises and brain friendly recipes, much to the delight of the younger students.

A big thank you goes out to our Librarians, Yensi, Hilda and Ivette for making this annual event such a huge success once again.

The Positive Effects of Gaming

This evening as I was wandering through posts on Google+, I came across this post by the Frugal Dad.

Now much of this is not news. Many of us have been hearing for years that gamer's brains are getter at certain tasks and that their are physical differences between brains on games and those not. Most of us are also very aware of the educational benefits of gaming,  but didn't you know that video games were being used for pain management in hospitals?  Did you know that after 21 hours of play a week, the benefits are outweighed by negative impact.  I didn't, not until today, so I thought I would share.

The following Info graphic  is worth looking at, so do scroll down.
