LRC Weekly Bulletin Oct 8th Week

It has been a busy week in the LRC. Here are some of the highlights!

This week we focused on the concept of censorship through Banned Books Week activities.

Forum with the Maquilishuat School and ABC

ABC 12th grade students   and 10th and 11th grade students had the opportunity to exchange ideas and listen to perspectives regarding censorship with a focus on George Orewell’s book 1984. This was a valuable opportunity to share and collaborate with students in another IB School, and reflect on how censorship affects both literature and the world around us.

This forum was made possible thanks to the collaboration between Spanish teachers and librarians from both schools. It was a great reminder of how powerful partnerships can be — not just in sharing learning, but in building understanding and friendships across communities.

Gamifying Learning in the LRC

This week, students and teachers from the Secondary School enjoyed some novel (pun intended!) learning experiences in the LRC through creative games and collaborative discussions.

Students in Grades 8–11 explored the theme of censorship in literature using books such as 1984, The Hate U Give, The Handmaid’s Tale, Harry Potter, and To Kill a Mockingbird. Working together in escape room challenges, they had to solve clues and think critically about how censorship appears in different stories and contexts.

Meanwhile, our 6th and 7th graders took part in engaging presentations, lively discussions, and a fun Kahoot! competition—all centered around the idea of censorship in books and society.

It was an exciting week that blended learning, teamwork, and play—showing that when we gamify education, curiosity and collaboration thrive.

Media from these activities and more can be enjoyed  in our LRC Flickr Photogalleries.
